The University of Tennessee was founded in 1794, a fact that many students know. Nearly 170 years later, Theotis Robinson Jr., Charles Edgar Blair and Mae Gillespie became the first African-Americans to enroll in undergraduate classes, fully desegregating the University of Tennessee.
The fact of the matter is that Smokey was welcomed to Rocky Top eight years before Black people were. With continued racial tensions in our community, Daily Beacon columnists Austin Smith, Mustafa Ali-Smith, and Trinity Worthy step back and evaluate where we are fifty-eight years later.

In this age where albums are becoming obsolete in exchange for singles and EPs, it only makes sense that the landscape of award shows is changing to fit these more frequent formats of music.
Now, mix-tapes are becoming nominated for Grammys while EPs take home actual awards.
Some may be against this change. However, the adjustments made to the design of the Grammy awards could produce great results that include looking at a wider range of music and taking into consideration projects that otherwise wouldn’t be glanced at.
